Liverpool’s attacking quartet of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah possess the power to terrorise any defence across the globe.
The foursome, who have been coined as the ‘ Fab Four’, needn’t step foot on the pitch, as simply mentioning their names sends shock waves of fear to the core of the Premier League , followed by aftershocks to Europe and beyond.
But just who is the most influential member of this four-piece band that are hitting all the right notes together?
Mohamed Salah:
Having only joined in the summer from Roma for a club record £36.9 million fee, the Egyptian hasn’t waited long to leave his mark on the side.
After a previous short and somewhat unsuccessful stint at Chelsea, there were some fans left confused at this acquisition, with many throwing forward the case that he was not the finished article that Liverpool required.
There’s little discussion these days as to whether or not he’s the finished article, though, as the electric winger has let his feet do the talking in that respect.
Salah has bagged an astonishing 18 goals in 23 games in all competitions, which is not too bad for someone who allegedly doesn’t have an eye for goal and lacks a clinical edge.
It’s safe to say that no one anticipated such a destructive and dazzling start to life since his move to L4. In a similar vein, it’s testing to forecast just how prolific he will continue to be. At this rate, who knows?
“Announce Salah”, was the rallying cry of Reds supporters on Twitter in the summer, as the 25-year-old neared his Anfield switch.
He’s wasted little time in achieving this task, as not only has he announced himself to Liverpool, but he’s let the whole world know how brilliant he truly is.
Sadio Mane:
Sadio Mane was without question the club’s best player last campaign, in what was his debut season at Liverpool.
Before Salah eclipsed the club’s record buy in June, the Senegalese international arrived at Anfield with the honour of the being the number one signing in history.
As was the case with Salah, Mane was ridiculed before he even put on the famous red shirt.
The £34 million sum paid for his services was laughed at and labelled ludicrous. However, the former Southampton man has steadily put to bed people’s original misjudgments.
Last year Jurgen Klopp’s men sealed their long-awaited return to Europe’s elite, as a fourth placed finish ensured Champions League football, and it was Mane who moved Liverpool back into the limelight with his scintillating showings.
He swiftly established himself as a Kop favourite, illustrated by his ” oh mane mane” chant, which like the jet-heeled winger, enjoyed a sharp rise to prominence.
Philippe Coutinho:
Arguably Liverpool’s prize asset.
Coutinho joined the club in January 2013 for a low-cut price of £8.5 million from Inter Milan and has since become a key figure at the club.
The samba star has become renowned for being a player who doesn’t take kindly to ordinary goals, with long range pile drivers being more his forte.
His nimble feet, killer final pass , and wand of a right foot have seen Coutinho develop the nickname of ” the magician”.
It’s safe to say this tag is fitting, as the Brazilian has pulled the rabbit out of the hat on a few occasions when the Reds were craving a moment of magic, though, Kopites will be hoping he doesn’t perform a disappearing act in the January transfer window.
The Liverpool man was heavily sought after by Barcelona in the summer, but a failed transfer request and multiple rejected bids later, Coutinho remained on Merseyside.
Klopp will be hoping to keep the 25-year-old at Anfield, as both his goals and assists are something that would prove toilsome to replace.
Roberto Firmino:
Roberto Firmino joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 from Hoffenheim, for a reported £29 million fee.
The Reds’ number nine began his Anfield tenure by operating mainly in a central attacking midfield role, as well as out wide on the flanks. When Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers, however, the situation swiftly transformed.
He now is the club’s out-and-out striker, though; he is not your typical marksman.
Unorthodox is a word that springs to mind with Firmino, for he is not blessed with pace, nor does he score you 20+ goals a season. Having said this, he carries out much more than meets the eye.
Comparisons of Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez can be put to the table, as like the former Reds; he is a workhorse.
Firmino scores a respectable amount but also happily sets up his fellow team mates.
In all, he has featured 112 times for the club, scoring 35 times.
Summary:
Four fantastic forward-thinking frontmen are what Liverpool have at their disposal. It’s a frightening prospect for both Klopp and opposition managers.
Below, is a breakdown of each player’s goal and assists records from this season.
Statistics 17/18- All competitions:
Salah- 23 games: 18 goals + 4 assists
Mane- 15 games: 7 goals + 5 assists
Coutinho- 14 games: 9 goals +6 assists
Firmino- 22 games: 12 goals+ 6 assists
Each Liverpool star complement each other when they step out on the pitch, but just who is the main man for the Reds?
Is it Salah, simply for his goalscoring prowess?
Is it Mane, for his lightning quick speed which allows him to wreak havoc?
Is it Coutinho, for his supreme skills and moments of sheer class?
Or is it Firmino, for his ability to cover all bases in his game?
While this is a tough decision to make, one thing’s for sure; Liverpool are building something special and it’s this devastating frontline that are spearheading the charge towards the promised land.
